The Sloppy Joeโ€™s Fishing Team followed Ernest Hemingwayโ€™s tradition by going to Cuba and bringing back THE BIG ONE โ€“ a Cuban National Record Dolphin at 67.5 pounds!

It was in the last hour of the last day of the 1998 International Ernest Hemingway Billfish Tournament when the teamโ€™s Stewart Finemore landed the whopper. Finemore, B.J. Martin and Sidney Snelgrove (owner of SLOPPY JOEโ€™S) established a precedent for the Sloppy Joeโ€™s Fishing Team, breaking the old record by 15 pounds. The team reported the Cuban people were very gracious to them, โ€œWe could not have been better received,โ€ said Snelgrove, โ€œIt was one of the best weeks of my life.โ€

The late Gregorio Fuentes (left), was the captain for Ernest Hemingway for 37 years. Gregorio caught the legendary marlin that inspired Hemingway to write โ€œThe Old Man and the Sea,โ€ and years later, Gregorioโ€™s role was portrayed in the film of the same name by actor Spencer Tracy. John Klausing (General Manager of Sloppy Joeโ€™s, at right) is seen with Gregorio during his visit to Cuba in September, 1998. We are proud of our historic connection to Hemingway and all the colorful characters who have enjoyed SLOPPY JOEโ€™S over the decades!
