The Sloppy Joeโs Fishing Team followed Ernest Hemingwayโs tradition by going to Cuba and bringing back THE BIG ONE โ a Cuban National Record Dolphin at 67.5 pounds!
It was in the last hour of the last day of the 1998 International Ernest Hemingway Billfish Tournament when the teamโs Stewart Finemore landed the whopper. Finemore, B.J. Martin and Sidney Snelgrove (owner of SLOPPY JOEโS) established a precedent for the Sloppy Joeโs Fishing Team, breaking the old record by 15 pounds. The team reported the Cuban people were very gracious to them, โWe could not have been better received,โ said Snelgrove, โIt was one of the best weeks of my life.โ

The late Gregorio Fuentes (left), was the captain for Ernest Hemingway for 37 years. Gregorio caught the legendary marlin that inspired Hemingway to write โThe Old Man and the Sea,โ and years later, Gregorioโs role was portrayed in the film of the same name by actor Spencer Tracy. John Klausing (General Manager of Sloppy Joeโs, at right) is seen with Gregorio during his visit to Cuba in September, 1998. We are proud of our historic connection to Hemingway and all the colorful characters who have enjoyed SLOPPY JOEโS over the decades!
